The Missouri Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned electric, steam, natural gas, water and sewer and telephone companies. Its mission is to ensure Missouri consumers have access to safe, reliable and reasonably priced utility service while allowing those utility companies under our jurisdiction an opportunity to earn a reasonable return on their investment. The PSC also regulates manufacturers and retail dealers who sell new and used manufactured homes and modular units. The commission was established in 1913. The PSC is comprised of five commissioners, who are appointed by the governor.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- FEBRUARY 19, 2008

JEFFERSON CITY—The Missouri Public Service Commission will hold local public hearings in Joplin and Reeds Spring in late March to receive customer comment on an electric rate case filed by The Empire District Electric Company.  Local public hearings also give customers an opportunity to bring any service related issues to the commission’s attention.

The local public hearing schedule appears below:

*Informal question and answer session begins.  The local public hearing starts approximately 30 minutes later.  For the 6:00 pm local public hearings, the hearings will conclude at approximately 9:00 pm, or earlier if all persons present who wish to testify have done so.  For the noon local public hearing, it will conclude at approximately 3:00 pm, or earlier if all persons present who wish to testify have done so. 

 

These local public hearings will be held in buildings that meet accessibility standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.  If a customer needs additional accommodations to participate in these hearings, please call the Public Service Commission’s hotline at 1-800-392-4211 (voice) or Relay Missouri at 711 prior to the hearings.

On October 1, 2007, The Empire District Electric Company filed a $34.7 million electric rate case with the Public Service Commission.  If approved, Empire states a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity would experience a monthly increase of approximately $9.75.

The Missouri Public Service Commission will hold formal evidentiary hearings in this case during the weeks of May 12 through May 16, and May 19 through May 23.  These hearings will be held in the commission’s offices located in the Governor Office Building, 200 Madison Street, in Jefferson City.    

The Empire District Electric Company serves approximately 144,000 electric customers in the Missouri counties of Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Polk, St. Clair, Stone and Taney.
